Unit 57

What have you been asked to do? Where did you find the photos from?

We where asked to go around the school, to find photos of certain topics such as documentary, fashion advertisement, photo journalism etc. Once we had them, we would then have to get a piece of A3 paper and stick all of them down, with a description of why you choose it, who was the target audience, does it fulfill its purpose etc. Miss Clarke would then go round each one of us as we present it to the class and say what we feel about each one. We had to look in places like books, in the art studio, newspapers and the internet. My photos where mainly from magazines as miss provided us with a lot that we could cut up and stick too our mood board.

Why do you choose those particular images?

In the lesson, we didn't have time to finish our hole mood boards, and we had a technical difficulty with our photos printing that we took off the cameras we used as well as ones from the internet we found. This meant we didn't get photos for all of our topics given, but we got as many as we could. I chose brightest boldest and the most original photos i could find instead of going for classical examples. For example a car advert for the topic of promoting. Instead i went for a page in a dentistry magazine which promoted a dentistry website. They chose to not use a massive image and use persuasive text instead. I thought this was a good effect to use for there promotion and decided it would be a good example to talk about and add to my mood board.

How difficult (or easy) was it to collect the images?

When gathering pictures, some topics where harder to find than others. For example in every magazine there will be promotion, advertising and portrait images, which meant for those i got a lot of examples and had a lot to choose from. However, for topics such as photo journalism, i wasn't really sure what it meant, and had to search through many different magazines and books in the library to find a correct image. In the end i did find one but i feel this was the most challenging topic to find a photo for. It was easy to use the library as there is such a range in there to choose from, and we where given a camera each to take pictures of the books we found with the correct image in. There where some photos however that required the internet that we wouldn't necessarily find around the school such as fine art and illustration. This was easy for us to do once we knew where to look. For example for the illustration topic, we all thought it meant instructions which where illustrated to people such as fire extinguisher signs and exits, however what it really meant was a photo of an individual, with sketches and illustrative designs on it. In the end i established this by googling the term and discovering what it really meant.

What did other people think of your choices?

During the group discussion, many members of the group suggested along with miss that the strongest picture i had found was of the portrait topic where i had a black and white photo of a famous man. They felt that his body language towards the camera made it the strongest image as he was looking directly into the camera from an angle where he was slightly almost looking down at it. That was all the feedback from other people on my mood board, and i didn't ask them individually.

Is there any images that cross over in your photographic choices that made it difficult to choose suitable images for the different applications?

Many of the photo topics crossed over, which made it difficult for me to distinguish between the two. For example at first i though that advertising and promotion where the same thing as they both shared the same intent. However when i looked thoroughly through magazines i realized advertising was advertising a specific item a long with price etc, where as promotion simply showed the viewer what the item was with no additional information like a new film release or a new course etc. I found that if you didn't choose these correctly, they would cross over within the images we would select. I also found that fashion, portrait and advertising would cross over as mainly, portraits are used to advertise an item of clothing or make up which they want to sell to there audience. This meant that almost all of these photos interlinked in magazines and on my mood board.
