Mrs Merricks learining Log

Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th September 2013

Today we spent the lessons doing a meeting and informing myself and Deniz of what the task we had been set was whilst we werent there. The rest of the group also went over a few things that where discussed in the meeting last week, such as what roles we had set everyone. Our task is to create a website on e-saftey and each where given a role in order to create it. However, we had a lot of things yet to discuss before we started actually making it. To help us all understand our roles and what needs to be done, we wrote on the board what each of us would need to cover in each sector we are working in. Here is a picture of what we had done on the board.

The task catagroy i was given was the role on managing asthetic design, whilst Deniz's was to find and create case studys. Below is a list of everyone elses job within the creation of our webpage.

  • Producer - Maqsood (Assistant = nicole)
  • Branding - Nicole ( Assistant = Maqsood)
  • Annimation - Dieter
  • Game - sam
  • Video - Edna
  • Suitable Content - Josh
  • Resources - Maqsood
  • Website designer - Dieter ( Assistant = Sam)

  • This brainstorm helped me a lot to gather an understanding of each role and what has to be consisted in each. However, i was still confused on how this would be applied and how it would work out when we began to create it. At this point, miss pointed out points during us brainstorming and cleared up that we would be the manager of that section, but we where all helping each other contributing ideas and critique on all the ideas we had come up with individually. I would say at this point in the lesson a disadvantage was that i was clueless and struggled to get my head round our task for a long time without asking miss for help. My role could fit into a number of different other peoples. This could make my role easier for me as i lack in creativity and imagination, so i could develop and work from other peoples ideas who are in slightly similar roles to me. I then spent the last part of the lesson creating a wiki where we would put all our meeting notes on and other information we need or think of.

    Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th September 2013

As i wasn't here for the first few lessons, i missed out on us being introduced to Assignment 1. Therefore on Tuesday, miss sent us all a reminder email as to remind us of exactly what we had to do. We where set a number of tasks that we would have to complete on social action and community campaigns, which where to be put onto a power point that we would preform to Miss Merrick and the rest of the class. Our first task was to research into the definitions of social action and community campaigns, with the aim and my other additional information for each. This was quite hard to research into these definitions as very few actually gave us clear answers. The good websites however took long to find, such as a Prezi made by a university lecturer which gave me a little bit more of an understanding for each term. I also had a  lot of images and a few videos that i added to it as it would break up the large amount or text i had, making it easier for the audience to stay interacted with the presentation. This week took longer than it should have done to answer the first section on Tuesday, but took a little longer to research than expected. This was a disadvantage but yet an advantage was that by doing lots of research i found lots of websites that gave me the answers to not just the definition, but also the aims therefore helping me with the next section.

    Tuesday 24th and Wednesday 25th September 2013

We where then asked to look into two campaigns and research into certain questions that miss provided for us. Miss also provided us with a number of different campaigns we could look into so that we where on the right lines of what campaigns are appropriate. The campaigns i chose where the green cross code and talk to frank. I chose these as i felt they would be the most interesting to research, and there would be a lot of information on each that i could research about, so i wouldn't be lift with very little to discuss. These questions took me a long time as i found lots of materials and research for each campaign. I used a number of videos and images to break up the text i had as it was very rich in text. This resulted in me ending up working on it in frees and at home to complete in time for the 2nd when we would be preforming it.  Below is each question and how i found researching them

    1) What formats are the campaigns?
I found this a very good and easy question to answer as i already had prior knowledge of how each campaign presented themselves through media platforms. For example the green cross code was advertised through TV adverts as well as through leaflets, which is extremely similar to the talk to frank campaign. Websites such as Wikipedia told me a lot of the overall facts on talk to frank of what and why they use that certain media platform, however this isn't the most reliable website to choose. This is because it can be edited by anyone and the information i have found could be incorrect. I would say this was one of the disadvantages to this question as when researching into such little detail questions, Wikipedia was a good website to use, despite its potential inaccuracy.

    2) What was the purpose of the campaigns?
Again, this was a easy and quick question for me to complete as i already had prior knowledge, For example whilst the green cross code campaigns purpose is to keep all ages safe when crossing the road, the talk to frank campaigns purpose is to teach teens about the dangers of drugs and offer help to them. Even by going on the actual talk to frank website it gave me a little more information into what they try to help people about and how they do it. However for the green cross code campaign i had to go through a lot of news channel articles to develop my answer, as there is not a actual green cross code website. This was an advantage as it ensured my information was all reliable as they where from websites that couldn't be adjusted.

    3) Who are the target audience?

This question was easy for the campaigns i used as it was self explanatory from all the previous research i had done from the other questions, as well as from my knowledge. However, i did have to think a little more into the target audience as talk to frank wasn't just for teens and the green cross code wasn't just for younger children. For the green cross code campaign, i realized this when i was on YouTube looking for adverts or anything that was relevant that i could include. From this i found a short help clip on how parents should address their children of any age to be safe crossing roads, leaving parents and older children as two more audiences. This made me then automatically think of two more audiences i could include, resulting in an advantage as i wasn't just assuming there was only one target audience set for this campaign. Again, on the talk to frank website there is a lot of information about each drug as well as videos, which could not only be of beneficial use for teens but for parents or adults who want to teach there child the dangers or have queries on drugs themselves.

    4) How to measure impact and how has the campaign helped to improve it?

This question was hard in some parts as many facts and figures where hard to find. In the end i had to look on websites such as BBC news articles, limiting my sources of information. For this , i only found two statistic for each campaign which where relatively strong, but not as many as i would have hoped. This was a disadvantage as i lacked in statistics in this question as well as time to find out more. However for facts i displayed a large amount as a lot of websites again such as news articles and the DVLA provided me with quotes and key points. Over all this was a difficult question for my two campaigns but yet i feel i bought back the information through the facts side of the question.

    5) Compare the 2 campaigns

This was again a difficult question as there where not many for each that i could discuss. I only found around .......... which involved whether they where both community or social action media campaigns and what types of media platforms they used etc. This was my weakest question and i ran out of time to develop and have a long think about many more, which i am sure there was. I went into details for each point i made which i feel was the only advantage of my work from this question.

Miss Merrick also stated at the bottom of the email that she sent last week a few tips that we had to consider in order to get or performance marks the best they can be. I really have to analyse and consider these and performance is something i struggle with and always get very low marks for. These included body language such as eye contact, Technique such as clarity, tone and volume, and finally good knowledge and a good presentation. this is something i feel will be better than the actual performance itself.

    Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd October 2013

In this lesson we where finishing up our work, adding last minute touches and preparing for our presentation tomorrow. Some people in the class went in separate rooms to practice and run through there work, but not all of us had finished. I was one who had a lot of touches to amend. I also had to get my script up to date as i had added new slides about the talk to frank campaign. As i haven't fully began this campaign yet i worked extremely hard in order to find videos, photos and appropriate research. As i spent a lot of this lesson on my script as well as a little research so i plan to keep going after school at home. This is a disadvantage because it has given me know time to practice, but yet i did get my script completed which would have been a bigger task to do at home then finding images, videos, and key statistics etc.

This was the lessons we would preform our power points to the rest of the class. My biggest weakness is performance and i always struggle with my confidence in presentations. When i first started speaking, i was quiet and had very little confidence. Then as my presentation went on i began speaking louder and stronger. My body language was poor and i didn't remain eye contact and i barely interacted with my audience throughout. To improve i could have looked up from my script made eye contact and ask questions to the audience to see what there current knowledge was on my campaigns. However in contrast, my script and power point was a lot stronger as i gave lots of information, facts and examples which where backed up by lots of photos and videos. I added a lot of videos to break up the amount of written script i had, as my script was extremely long and just with pictures alongside it, it still could have bored the audience and caused them to loose interest. I have learnt that our major project on e safety at Bluecoat would match a community media project as its target audiences isn't wide spread but just within the local area. The aims of community media match the same as ours will for our project, as it aims to help the community making it a clearer safer and better place to live. We can create posters, leaflets, adverts on the school bulletin, letters to parents and a video that we can put on the school website. All these media platforms are accessible to members of the school and their parents.

    Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th October 2013

In Tuesdays lesson, we was set a new assignment to work on. This was called unit 5, where we had to complete 4 tasks individually following the criteria given on the brief. The first task was to describe, give examples and write the advantages and disadvantages of each type of brief. Once we had began the work in lesson, we didn't get much done as miss fully explained the task giving us an advantage on the assignment so we had more of an idea of what to do to get the best grades. I only got two definitions with advantages and disadvantages completed. This made me realize it would be a bigger section of the assignment that i thought. The second task was to discuss the negotiation of the brief. This means discussing the importance of reading a brief before signing a contract, advantages and disadvantages of discretion, amendments that can be made to the brief and if there was any legal or ethical issues with our own brief. The third task is called reading a brief, which requires us to talk about what the structure of our brief is, why its important to read a brief thoroughly and what is our brief about. Finally the fourth task is named opportunities meaning a evaluation of things such as the opportunities the brief allows us to explore.

This involves things such as skills we have acquired or knowledge we will get to know for ourselves and how we personally as a production team can keep ourselves safe online. This deadline is for Wednesday 16th, so we have a lot of work to do to a very good standard. On Wednesday, I overall completed 5 of the 8, however I have decided it will be more beneficial for me  to add examples at the end when i have got detailed definitions and two strengths and weaknesses for each. It is an advantage as it would have took longer to do each type of briefs example due to the fact i would have to spend a long time finding how good each one was and how relevant it was to use and put in my work. However a negative meant that i would be delaying the next task of the work which i aim to be doing in next Tuesdays lesson, reducing the amount i do at home.

    Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th October 2013

During these lessons we where working on our assignment unit 5. In Tuesdays lesson, we got straight into completing our work that we have been doing since the 8th. We where also given our grades that we had been given for last years part of the project and what we are predicted to get. This gave us a helpful piece of information to remind us of the level and quality of work we needed to hand in to achieve the grades we need. Further more, i was very confused as over the last week me and a few members of the class thought we had to complete more work than we thought we did. We had only completed task one on the assignment 5, but the way the sheet was laid out that we where given, we thought we had to complete the three other sections as well. I cleared this up with miss and realized it was a mistake. This was an advantage that i asked as we would have all done more work than we should have. On Thursday 10th i had completed the first task within the unit to define the words and write advantages and disadvantages of each type of brief. We also had to find real life examples of each type of brief which i completed in Tuesdays lesson, which was very hard as many are personal and un published on Google.

This took up the hole two hours of the lesson as i had to a lot of research into each one to find good examples. After school, I then added pictures to break up the large amount of text i had written for each type of brief. This only took a small amount of time, which allowed me to work on the next sections of the assignment. I then went on to completing task 2, 3, and 4, but as i didn't understand some sections, i left them for when i was in lesson so i could ask Miss for help. This was a disadvantage as i took too long on the first task leaving all my work done at home. However an advantage that i was more concentrated and focused at home to fly through the work and get it done to the best of my ability in the time i had. This then lead to Wednesdays lesson, where at the start, miss went through the next unit that we had to complete for Wednesday the 6th of November. This means that we will have all of half term to complete it. Miss then said we could get on with the new project in the lesson or carry on with the deadline for today. As i still had a lot left to do, i decided it would be best to get one deadline out the way and finished, so during this lesson i asked miss for help and then completed all the sections i didn't finish at home. I even then had time to add some pictures to each of the 4 tasks we where given with in the assignment to make it more aesthetically pleasing.
