What is Social Action and Community Media Production? Unit 31

Analysis of my presentation

In my presentation, i explained the two terms social action media and community media. I then researched into two campaigns of my choice. I chose talk to frank the drug awareness campaign and the green cross code campaign. The main aims of my presentation where to not only understand my self more into media productions whether they be community based or social based, but to inform everyone in the class too. By researching about two different campaigns, we also found out media platforms they use in their campaigns so that we can take them on board and use them for when we are promoting our e saftey campaign for bluecoat.

The quality of my research was very in depth and i gave thorougher examples for how both terms where distributed through media platforms. At first when i started researching social action and community media, there was never any clear information about what it meant and what it entailed. However i ended up finding a lot of information from a number of different websites such as a prezi presentation created by a university lecturer. This ensured that it was reliable information in comparison to some sites i used such as Wikipedia. After explaining what both, I gave examples of how each was seen by the public. For example community media can be seen on the news on the local news report, or heard on the radio as it isn't as wide spread. I also found a group of people in York who try to make a difference in their community. This group was called KHOZ who are mainly aimed at youths and try to make a positive change. I even found a video of YouTube that they had made to advertise themselves and attempt to recruit new members. For social action media it will be almost all media platforms such as TV internet radio etc as it is more world wide than targeted at a certain area. An example i gave of this was through TV adverts where for example the NHS make moving and shocking adverts to try and stop smoking world wide and not just in one area.

For the green cross code campaign, after looking at all the media platforms they use i understood it was a social action media production as everyone needs to know how to be safe on the roads. This includes things like TV adverts, radio clips, TV programs and news reports. From these being publicized i found figures from current years on the number of child pedestrians killed or seriously injured by crossing the road from now in comparison to the past. From the rate dropping and remaining its lowest since 1979, it shows that the code has made an impact. The talk to frank campaigns main media platforms where through radio, internet and TV. They created humors adverts, light hearted radio clips and a website where people can get any help or information about anything they need - again a social action media production. They had little impact on a large number of people in comparison to the green cross code. This could be suggested for many reasons whether it being the fact almost all anti drug campaigns don't make a drastic effect to people, or that they made the adverts to funny and light hearted making people think its ok to take drugs and damage their bodies. However it has made an impact to some lives as many people do use the support line they offer. i found that 67% of young people would talk to frank if they needed too. This shows it has made an impact. I also got a quote from professional drug prevention who said anti drug campaigns don't work and aren't cost effective.

In my proformance, i didnt referance all my sources as it was mainly just facts and explaining the information i had. But for the facts such as the number of youths who would discuss issues with talk to frank and the number of deaths or injuries of child pedestrians, i did reference where i got the quote from. The one on the child pedestrians was from BBC and the talk to frank was from the home office statistics. At the end i compared my two campaigns. The first similarity between them was that both the campaigns where social action media productions. In terms of media distribution and target audience, they both cater for more than just one area and aim to make a wider difference to peoples lives as well as society. A second is that both campaigns are catered for youths and adult viewing trough the media platforms provided. All adverts etc where designed carefully for their target audience to ensure it suited it well. However this can be argued as the green cross code campaign can be suggested to be targeted more at youths as there are more child friendly adverts and leaflets than there is for adults and youths.

My biggest weakness is performance and i always struggle with my confidence in presentations. When i first started speaking, i was quiet and had very little confidence. Then as my presentation went on i began speaking louder and stronger. My body language was poor and i didn't remain eye contact and i barely interacted with my audience throughout. To improve i could have looked up from my script made eye contact and ask questions to the audience to see what there current knowledge was on my campaigns. However in contrast, my script and power point was a lot stronger as i gave lots of information, facts and examples which where backed up by lots of photos and videos. I added a lot of videos to break up the amount of written script i had, as my script was extremely long and just with pictures alongside it, it still could have bored the audience and caused them to loose interest. I have learnt that our major project on e safety at Bluecoat would match a community media project as its target audiences isn't wide spread but just within the local area. The aims of community media match the same as ours will for our project, as it aims to help the community making it a clearer safer and better place to live. We can create posters, leaflets, adverts on the school bulletin, letters to parents and a video that we can put on the school website. All these media platforms are accessible to members of the school and their parents.

Here is the video of my presentation in two parts.
